Land's End Wines
The Lands End Range...Lands End is located in the Elim Ward, near Cape Agulhas, South Africa’s most Southerly point. Elim on the other hand is part of a groundbreaking selection of vineyards that occupy minerally rich soil pockets of the southern most reaches of our continent. A full 200 km away from the cellar, this desolate area is continuously buffeted by salt laden winds off the confluence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The resulting wines reflect this austere landscape with deep rich flavours and hints of minerality, reminding one of their unique origins. Lands End wines are made in the most non-interventionist manner. The winemaker deliberately allows nature to guide him in sculpting the wines. Phenolic ripeness, correct sugar levels and a quality before quantity approach allows only the best fruit to come into the cellar. A strict sorting regime, beginning in the vineyard with bunch selection straight from the vines is further enforced at cellar door, where two further screenings on the sorting tables both prior to de-stemming and after, ensures only the best quality grapes make their way to the tanks and barrels. Our Lands End vineyard provided logistical challenges, but early picking into small lug boxes and transportation to our refrigerated stores, allows optimum control over the grapes. All the grapes are harvested after careful consideration of ripeness and attributes required to fulfill the Hidden Valley style. Vinification of the wine will therefore be based on the quantities harvested, it may sometimes require smaller volumes, thus extracting the best each row and vine can yield. Louis Nel Profile Having grown up in the Cape Winelands, Louis’s choice to make winemaking his career came quite naturally. Louis joined Hidden Valley in 2007 and was responsible for the 2008 harvest. At joining Louis said,“the Helderberg is one of my favourite terroirs in the country, and it has always been my passion to work with fruit from this unique area”
