Wine Magazine - SA Shiraz Challenge

Lands End Syrah 2008

Recently our Lands End Syrah 2008 won the best SA Shiraz award at this competition. Carey Adams was the head judge and stated that they were looking for a wine which represented a point of place out of nearly 200 submissions. The Lands End Syrah 2008, with its great minerality and salty flavours, certainly showed that it comes from an area influenced by extreme sea conditions. Carey stated that it was an unanimous choice amongst the judges from the outset as the wine that met their requirements set by the judges. The 2009 Lands End Shiraz is even better says Emma Moffat on our wine making team. The wine is available (for the moment) from most good outlets and restaurants as well as the cellar door. Congratulations for being Top of the Charts in Stellenbosch boys! Here’s to four more!

After a magnificent event held at the Bay Hotel’s Rotunda this weekend for The 2011 Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant Awards, Overture is proud to pronounce that they have made it to the top 5 of the Top 10 in this years’ prestigious awards. After opening up their doors on the 1st of November 2007 the restaurant has gone from strength to strength and, after four hard years in a very competitive industry, stand with 4 golden stars behind their name representing the four years they have been included in the Top 10. From the freshest fair, brilliant service and an ever changing menu, Overture’s mindset is based on evolution which has proved to be a great feat judging by the various awards they have managed to line up through the years. Bertus Basson, the Chef and owner of Overture, likes to keep things fresh and local which, along with seasoning, is the most important part of his food philosophy- fresh, local, simple- with just a dash of something spectacular. Hidden Valley Sauvignon Blanc awarded by critics and peers

Hidden Valley Sauvignon Blanc has enjoyed a month of ‘discovery’; first, and perhaps most excitingly, among our very own peers, and then in brisk succession, a silver medal at a major awards.

Winemakers Choice 2010 saw the current (2010) vintage win a coveted Diamond Award - a unique success in that winemakers alone decide the results, making this the only competition of its kind in the world. For the full results see www.winemakerschoice.co.za/2010-results.php.

The silver medal was won by the Hidden Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2010 at the prestigious Michelangelo International Wine Awards (MIWA), whose judges include 15 international wine experts. Full results and information about the awards can be found at www.michelangeloawards.com

The Hidden Gems also won Double Gold in the Veritas Awards and the Hidden Secret also won Gold in the Veritas Awards.

Hidden Valley and Louis’ Cape Winemakers’ Guild wines score 91+ in Wine Spectator and Stephen Tanzer report

In a double coup of sorts, Hidden Valley Top Secret and Louis’ Cabernet Sauvignon have scored above the critical 90-point mark in Wine Spectator USA, and Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar report, as part of their reviews on the 2010 lineup of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

Mouthwatering tasting notes were attributed to the wines by noted critics James Molesworth, who awarded 91 points to Top Secret in Spectator, and 92 points for Louis’ wine; and Stephen Tanzer, who gave the same scores in reverse in his September report.

The full articles can be found online at www.winespectator.com/webfeature/show/id/43624, and www.wineaccess.com/expert/tanzer/newhome.html, respectively.

The wines will be shown at the Cape Winemakers Guild 2010 showcase and auction; the latter, scheduled to take place on Saturday 2 October, the only means by which the wines can be bought.

Membership to the guild is by recommendation only; Louis having been a member since 2006. Further information can be found at www.capewinemakersguild.com.

The issue of ageability in South African Sauvignon Blanc

Tuesday, 2 February 2010

It’s a given these days that consumers regard South African Sauvignon Blanc as a wine that can’t age. In the case of well-made examples this is a misperception, which owes in large part to the way that the cultivar has been sold.
